Supporting their bestselling current “BLACK ICE” album, AC/DC is selling out stadiums and arenas around the world on a nearly two year long tour. Angus & Malcom Young and company are the creators of the quintessential Power Chord. Brian Johnson’s vocal is instantly identifiable to millions of rabid fans, and they have one of the most distinct guitar tones in the business. They expect everyone in the audience to hear it exactly that way- the audio challenge was keeping the technology state of the art, but maintaining a classic vintage sound – just like the Young brothers love it.
2010 TPi “FOH Engineer of Year” Paul “Pablo” Boothroyd has a very intimate knowledge of exactly what the brothers want, as he has been at the FOH helm for AC/DC since the early 90′s. Boothroyd and Clair have designed the custom, “Hybrid Sound System”, a combination of EV X-Array horn loaded Point Source system in unison with Clair i-5 modern day Line Array elements. The logistic demands of the tour require the system to transform from “Arena” to “Stadium” mode, often overnight.
Pablo is mixing the band strictly analog, with a 1987 Midas Pro 40 fully restored console to give him just the natural “valve” feel he is looking for. FOH is adorned by old school outboard discrete EQ , tube comps and analogue inserts. Speaker system management is handled by Clair Lake Dolby processing.
2010 TPi “Monitor Engineer of Year” nominee Jon Lewis handles the mind boggling high pressure mix onstage via a Midas H4000 and is assisted by long time AC/DC veteran Monitor System engineer Kenny Check.
Although the core of both the FOH and MON systems are analogue consoles, the support act/redundant system backup is handled by Midas PRO 6 consoles at both ends.
